Gramática: Advérbios
Em inglês, geralmente acrescentamos o sufixo “LY” a um adjetivo para formarmos o advérbio correspondente. Você já deve conhecer as formas “CAREFUL” e “CAREFULLY”, “BEAUTIFUL” e “BEAUTIFULLY”, não é mesmo?
She is beautiful.- Ela é linda.
- She sings beautifully.
- Ela canta maravilhosamente.
Até aí tudo bem, mas acontece que nem tudo que termina com “LY” é advérbio na língua inglesa, pois muitos adjetivos têm também a mesma terminação. “LOVELY”, “FRIENDLY” e “DEADLY” são apenas alguns desses exemplos. Tudo tranqüilo por enquanto, não é? Pois bem, mas a complicação não pára por aí. Há ainda as palavras que são tanto adjetivos quanto advérbios, terminadas em “LY” ou não, como “EARLY”, “DAILY”, “WEEKLY”, “MONTHLY”, “FAST”, “HARD”, “STRAIGHT”, entre outras. Além disso, muitas pessoas se confundem quanto à ortografia dos advérbios que apresentam o sufixo “LY” pois nunca sabem se devem usar uma ou duas letras “L”. A solução é bastante simples: escreva o adjetivo + “LY”. Conseqüentemente, se o adjetivo terminar em “L”, o advérbio terá duas letras “L”. Compare os exemplos:
