Falsos Cognatos: AMERICA
AMERICA = Estados Unidos
THE AMERICAS = América
O substantivo “AMERICA” é quase sempre empregado na língua inglesa para designar apenas os “Estados Unidos”. Muito embora “AMERICA” também signifique “América”, usa-se geralmente a forma “THE AMERICAS” para se referir ao continente americano. Prova disso é a sigla em inglês correspondente à ALCA: “FTAA – Free Trade Area of the Americas”. Assim, prefira dizer “Estados Unidos” se precisar traduzir “AMERICA” para a língua portuguesa. Se os americanos estão certos ou errados em adotar essa forma, não cabe a mim criticá-los aqui.
