This life is a test. It is only a test. Had it been an actual life, you would have received further instructions on where to go and what to do.

Actual
Actual means ‘real’, ‘exact’, ‘existing in fact.’

  • The actual number of people was much higher than we originally estimated.

You do not use actual to describe something which is happening or being done at the present time. Instead you use current or present.

  • How long have you been in your current / present job?

Actually
Actually means ‘in fact’, ‘really.’ It does not mean ‘at the present time.’ Use currently, at present, at the moment, now, or nowadays instead.

  • Nowadays there are actually lots of people who do voluntary work.

Cf. Falsos Cognatos: ACTUALLY

Had it been
This is the same as – ‘if it had been.’ When talking about past situations that did not happen, you use If + past perfect and would have + past participle

  • If I had known (said, done) … I would have gone (eaten, taken).

Compare:

  • (Now) I’m not tired. If I were tired, I would go to bed.
  • (Past) I wasn’t tired. If I had been tired, I would have gone to bed.

Cf. Gramática: Conditional I
Cf. Gramática: Conditional II
