TIPS & NOTES

A cedilla is a hook commonly placed under the letter C > Ç – to show that it is pronounced like an S rather than a K. For example:

• Maca – stretcher – pronounced with a K sound.
• Maçã – apple – pronounced with an S sound.

The cedilla is only used on the letter C before the vowels – A, O and U – and never comes at the beginning of a word. For example:

• Engraçado – funny
• Açougue – butcher
• Açúcar – sugar

So, you write bagunça, bagunçado (messy, in a mess), and bagunçar (to make a mess), but the person who makes the mess is the bagunceiro.
