Uso

• Frases na voz ativa expressam o que alguém (ou algo) faz. Frases na voz passiva expressam o que acontece a alguém (ou algo).
  • Frase na voz ativa:
    • Some hooligans attacked me.
    • Alguns torcedores selvagens me atacaram.
  • Frase na voz passiva:
    • I was attacked from behind.
    • Eu fui atacado pelas costas.
• Em frases na voz passiva, quem ou o que age pode ser introduzido pela preposição by.

  • Eu fui atacado por torcedores selvagens.
• A maioria das frases na voz passiva não menciona o agente da passiva, pois com freqüência a voz passiva é usada justamente porque o agente é desconhecido, está evidente ou não é importante.
  • The road has been closed. [Só é importante dizer que a via está interrompida - quem ou o que a interrompeu não é importante.]
  • Oh look, a window has been broken. [Não se sabe quem quebrou a janela.]

• Frases inglesas na voz passiva correspondem a construções em português com “se”.

• I‘m going to park in the station car park. There’s never a space in this road. [= decisão pensada]

Present Continuous

• O present continuous é usado quando já foram tomadas providências ou feitas combinações referentes ao futuro, ou para expressar que existe um horário preestabelecido.
  • I‘m meeting Ann for a meal tomorrow evening. I’ve booked a table for 7:30 at the Italian restaurant.
  • I’ve got a busy week. Tomorrow I‘m painting the kitchen, and on Friday I‘m doing the bathroom.
• Quando o present continuous se refere ao futuro, ele é usado com uma indicação temporal: p. ex., next week, on Friday, at seven o’clock etc.
• Freqüentemente, o present continuous ou going to podem ser usados indistintamente, sem diferença de significado.
  • Next Sunday I‘m meeting Phil. [= está decidido] / I‘m going to meet Phil. [= plano]

Simple Present

• O simple present é usado quando algo é preestabelecido por um guia, programa etc.
  • My train arrives at 7:43 and the concert starts at 8.

RESUMO

• going to = algo que está prestes a acontecer: “Estou prevendo isso”.
• going to = plano ou intenção: “Estou pretendendo isso”.

PASSADO SIMPLES

Diferentemente do pretérito na língua portuguesa, o “SIMPLE PAST” ou “PAST SIMPLE” é usado somente quando temos a definição de tempo em que a ação ocorre no passado. Essa definição pode ser explícita, como no primeiro exemplo, ou implícita, como no segundo, pois sabemos que Beethoven faleceu e que a ação certamente não tem nenhuma ligação com o presente. As ações ocorridas no passado que têm ligação com o presente ou que não têm especificação do tempo em que ocorrem devem ser descritas no “PRESENT PERFECT”. Observe os exemplos a seguir.

Li em um texto a frase You’ve gotta be kidding, mas não a compreendi. Aprendi que gotta é a contração de have got to. Eu diria You gotta be kidding. Não entendi o you’ve. Ficaria muito grato se pudesse me explicar.

Tanto you gotta como you’ve gotta são aplicáveis. Se for para contrair you have got to, ficará you’ve gotta. Contraindo you have to, ficará you got to, e então you gotta (sem a palavra have). Mas, na realidade, tanto faz um como o outro.

You do not say that a planned event ‘happens.’ You say that it ‘takes place’.

• The meeting between the two presidents took place in February.

You can also use ‘happen’ to indicate that something happens unexpectedly, is the case by chance, or is surprising.

• If you happen to see him, tell him I need to speak to him. (= unexpectedly, by chance)
• As it happens, I am free on Monday. (= by chance, although it was not planned)
• He happens to like cooking. (= although this is surprising)

Shit happens
A very informal expression used when you want to tell someone that bad or unpleasant things often happen without any special reason, and that these things happen to everybody and not just to them.

• A: “My laptop broke down in the middle of my presentation. I was so pissed!” B: “Hey, man, shit happens.”

Observação deste blog: Longe de querer fazer apologia ao uso de palavras de baixo calão, a intenção é esclarecer mostrando como e onde usar e, principalmente, onde não usar essas expressões. O conhecimento sempre foi e continua sendo a melhor alternativa à ignorância. Não pense, portanto, que por escutar estes termos com frequência em filmes, letras de música etc. fica “engraçadinho” usá-las no idioma inglês em qualquer situação. Se necessário, use-as com cautela.

Tenho uma dúvida quanto ao verbo to get. Quais são as formas do past participle e past simple? É I have got? Ou I have gotten? Sempre ouço I’ve got nos filmes americanos e ingleses. Mas li um artigo dizendo que o correto é I have gotten. Não é estranho?

A respeito de get, tanto os americanos quanto os ingleses usam got como past simple. O past participle no inglês americano é normalmente gotten, mas no inglês britânico é quase sempre got. Portanto, você ouvirá I have got mais no inglês britânico e I have gotten mais no americano. Ambos são corretos, e não há regra a respeito de quem usa o quê, embora os ingleses tendam a achar que gotten soa inculto (não é, já tendo sido o padrão na própria Inglaterra).

Percebendo o enorme interesse e curiosidade a respeito das contrações em inglês, resolvi incluir aqui uma relação que elaborei para um leitor, com alguns comentários pertinentes. Primeiro, vai uma explicação em inglês; depois, em português.

These contractions are only used in dialogue. They are extremely informal. We normally don’t use them in writing, except jokingly or to represent speech. They can be and are used in song titles and lyrics.

It must always be remembered that they represent, and I repeat, only represent, the sound of naturally spoken English. They shouldn’t be used for any other purpose whatsoever. Comic strips and things like that also use these contractions, so if you just happen to be a comic-strip writer in English, go ahead and use them at work. If you want to go ahead and risk using them out of context, OK. You’ll run the risk of appearing a little odd.

There is a distinct difference between them and the normal and acceptable contractions such as I am = I’m; she is = she’s; they have = they’ve; etc.

The contractions which follow could be named as “spoken only” contractions, to differentiate them from the regular ones.

Essas contrações são usadas apenas em diálogos. São extremamente informais. Normalmente não as usamos em textos escritos, a não ser como brincadeira ou para representar a fala. São usadas nos títulos e nas letras de música.

Deve-se sempre lembrar que elas representam – repito, somente representam – o som do inglês falado naturalmente. Não devem ser usadas para nenhum outro propósito. Tiras, charges e outras coisas do gênero as usam. Portanto, se você for um produtor desse tipo de material em inglês, fique tranqüilo e vá em frente no seu trabalho. Se quiser arriscar fora desse contexto, correrá o risco de ser considerado esquisito, para dizer o mínimo.

Há uma distinção bem clara entre elas e as contrações normais e aceitáveis, tais como I am = I’m; she is = she’s; they have = they’ve etc.

As contrações que seguem poderiam ser chamadas de “contrações apenas faladas”, para diferenciá-las das contrações normais.

  • The mugger came outta nowhere.

  • Ele é um aspirante a cantor, mas canta desafinado. Não sabe cantar afinado.
    • Wannabe, como adjetivo, já está incorporado no inglês e é aceito como normal para descrever alguém que pretende algo, apesar de não estar qualificado.

• gofer = go for
  • He’s the gofer at the office. He goes for tea, goes for coffee, goes for a sandwich.
  • Ele é o faz-tudo no escritório. Busca chá, café, sanduíche.
    • Gofer está se tornando palavra comum.
• ain’t = am not/is not/are not
  • I/he/she/you/we/they ain’t feeling too good after eating so much.
  • A gente não está se sentindo bem após ter comido tanto.
  • It ain’t happening.
  • Não está acontecendo.

• wimme = with me
  • You comin’ wimme? = Are you coming with me?
  • Vem comigo?
• Gotta = Got to
  • It’s late. I’ve gotta go. (I have got to go.)

• Em português, usa-se às vezes o presente quando em inglês seria necessário usar will/won’t.
  • Eu vejo você amanhã.
  • I‘ll see (I see) you tomorrow.

Previsão

• A previsão de coisas certas e imutáveis é feita com will e won’t.
  • We will know (We know) the result tomorrow. It will be (It is) in all the papers.
  • We have to put the clocks back an hour tonight. It‘ll be (It is) dark at this time tomorrow.
• Freqüentemente, o ato de prever se baseia na experiência. Ele pode ser restrito/ressalvado pelo uso de perhaps, probably etc.
  • It’s Sunday so we (probably) won’t have (don’t have) any problems finding somewhere to park.
• will freqüentemente vem depois de I think, I expect, I hope, I’m certain / sure / afraid.
  • I expect I’ll see (I see) Christine at the party this evening.

Decisões espontâneas

• will/won’t é usado para expressar decisões espontâneas (p.ex., ofertas e propostas).
  • Oh, the phone is ringing. – I‘ll answer (I answer) it.
  • Red wine or white? – I won’t (don’t) have any wine, thanks. I‘ll just have (I just have) water.
  • I‘ll carry (I carry) that suitcase for you.

Disposição

• will/won’t expressam disposição/falta de disposição para fazer algo (p.ex., promessa, ameaça).
  • Tom will take (takes) us to the airport, I’m sure. Let’s ask him.
  • They want to cut down these trees, but I won’t (don’t) let them do it.
  • I‘ll be (I am) here, I promise.
  • I‘ll throw (I throw) you out if you say another word.

RESUMO
