Em inglês, o termo "barômetro" (instrumento que mede a pressão atmosférica inventado por Torricelli em 1643) é freqüentemente usado no sentido figurado para indicar o estado de espírito, o clima, a opinião geral, etc. da sociedade como um todo ou de um grupo de pessoas. Em português, geralmente usamos a palavra "termômetro" nestas situações. Observe os exemplos abaixo.
