Se
precisar escrever o nome da capital alemã na
língua inglesa, não se esqueça
de grafá-lo com a letra "N". "Berlim",
com "M", é correto apenas em português.

The
owner of the "Lover's Point Hotel" asked
Hardy Pyle to go to the local butcher shop to
buy some steaks. The butcher told Hardy that he
had 18 steaks for sale which varied in quality.
Half of the steaks were worth $4 and the other
half worth $6. If the butcher selected the steaks
they would be $4 each and if Hardy selected them
they would be $6 each. Bearing in mind that the
butcher will obviously choose the lower quality
steaks, what should Hardy do in order to get the
"best all around" deal?

uma vez de estar conversando com a proprietária
de uma escola franqueada de inglês.
As janelas estavam abertas pois o dia estava
bem quente. Só que nos fundos da
escola havia uma marmoraria, o que, como
você sabe, não é das
atividades mais silenciosas. Ela pediu desculpas
pelo barulho dizendo "I'm sorry about
the noise, they are cutting marbles (peço
desculpas pelo barulho, estão cortando
mármores)".
Pois
bem, mármore em inglês é
de fato "marble", só que
diferentemente do português, não
leva o plural quando está se referindo
à pedra. Pode-se ter:
a
piece of marble
some
marble
a lot of marble
Porém
não existe "a marble" ou
"two marbles", quando está
se referindo ao mineral. É mais um
caso de substantivo incontável. Mas
existe "marble" que é contável.
"A marble", "ten marbles",
"hundreds of marbles" até!
E sabe o que são "marbles"?
Bolinhas de gude! É o nome do jogo
também.

Quando
eu era criança jogávamos muito
bolinha de gude.
Só
posso presumir que em tempos pré-históricos
usavam-se bolinhas de gude feitas de pedra
mesmo, em vez do vidro de hoje. Bem, só
para terminar, temos também uma expressão
que é "to lose your marbles"
(perder suas bolinhas de gude). Se você
não for um bom jogador pode, de fato,
acabar perdendo-as, mas a expressão
quer mesmo dizer "ficar doido".
