While
mixing sand, gravel, and cement for the foundation
of a house, a worker noticed a small bird hopping
along the top of the foundation wall. The bird
misjudged a hop and fell down one of the holes
between the blocks. The bird was down too far
for anyone to reach it. Someone suggested using
two sticks to reach down into the hole and pull
the bird out, but this idea was rejected for fear
it would injure the fragile bird. What would be
the easiest way to get the bird out of the hole
without injuring it?

ATM
Que
leitores atentos! Fui gentilmente informado que,
no Volume II de "Como não aprender
inglês", caí na incoerência
de usar duas designações para a
sigla ATM (que é como os americanos chamam
os seus caixas eletrônicos).
Primeiro,
disse que são “Automatic Teller Machines”
e depois, chamei-os de “Automated Teller
Machines”. “Automated” é
a palavra correta, segundo o meu amigo Ron Martinez,
gringo (porém da versão americana)
e escritor como eu. O Ron aproveitou para me perguntar
se, na Inglaterra, o funcionário no caixa
do banco era chamado também “teller”.
Disse-lhe que o mais comum na Inglaterra é
chamá-los de “cashier” /ka-shia/
embora “teller” seja também
usado.
Ele
ainda aproveitou para apontar uma curiosidade:
mesmo não se usando mais o verbo “to
tell” com o sentido de contar dinheiro ou
objetos, antigamente era usado assim. Hoje, realmente
sobrou “to count” com esta finalidade,
embora existam outros sinônimos.
E
não é que “to count”
e “to tell” significam "contar"
em português? Adoro estas pequenas revelações!
