There
are three extremely bright men seeking the hand
of Ms. Candy Barr. Candy loves her men smart,
but cannot decide which one of the three is the
smartest. Consequently, she proposes a test. Candy
places a mark on each man's forehead and tells
them that each of them has either a blue mark
or a red mark. She instructs them to raise their
hand if they see a blue mark on either of the
other two. The first man to determine what color
his mark is, and explain how he arrived at that
conclusion will have her hand in marriage. Each
man raised his hand, and a few moments later,

AUTOMÁTICAS
Continuando
no assunto das mensagens automáticas em
inglês, acabei de ser informado do seguinte:
"I will be attending a training from August18th,
to 20th,03"
Lembra-se das "First Impressions"? Da
sua importância? Pois é, esta mensagem
contém vários erros e, com certeza,
uma boa primeira impressão não é
o que deve causar. Posso contar pelo menos cinco.
(Cinco erros, não boas impressões).
O mais grave, sem dúvida, é o uso
da frase "A training". "Training"
(treinamento, claro, você já sabia
disso, sei) é substantivo não contável
em inglês, não podendo haver "one
training", "twenty trainings" e
nem "a training". Simplesmente "training",
como em "Training for the Olympics takes
up a lot of time" (Treinar para os jogos
olímpicos toma muito tempo) ou "While
training for the race he broke his leg" (Enquanto
treinava para a corrida ele quebrou a perna).
Excepcionalmente, pode haver um artigo definido:
"The training of soldiers is important"
(o treinamento de soldados é importante).
Já
que nossa missivista está num curso de
treinamento de três dias, ela deve usar
a palavra "training" como adjetivo de
"course". "A training course".
(Podemos ter uma "training session"
ou "department" também, bem como
"training shoes" ou "training school").
"E
os outros erros?", posso ouvir você
perguntando. Bom, são estes:
1) Sem espaço entre o "t" de
"August" e o "1" de 18.
2) Vírgula após "th" de
18 (desnecessária).
3) Deve ser "the 20th" (ou August 20th).
4) Não se escreve "03". Deve-se
escrever "2003" (mas, para falar a verdade,
não é nem necessário mencionar
o ano, concorda?).
5) E, finalmente, se eu fosse detalhista, eu até
implicaria - um pouco - com o uso de "attending".
Prefiro "I will be on a training course from
August (the) 18th to the 20th". Mas, como
tento deixar o perfeccionismo aos outros, não
mencionarei este detalhe.
