One
day Gino and Gweedo had an insatiable craving
for dandelion wine. They drove along the country
roads stopping and picking the weeds where they
could. At the end of the day, Gino had picked
five bushels and Gweedo picked three. Next they
stopped at Fanuchi's since he promised to bake
them pizzas in exchange for 1/3 of the dandelions
picked. Not sure of the fairest way to divide
the eight bushels, they put them into 24 baskets,
each keeping eight. In exchange for his eight
baskets, Fanuchi made them eight pizzas. The problem
started when Gino and Gweedo disagreed on how
to divide the pizzas. Gino said he deserved more
since he picked five bushels to Gweedo's three.
Since they each have eight baskets of dandelions,
how should the pizzas be divided?

FASCINATE
The third grade teacher asked her students to
use the word "fascinate" in a sentence.
Molly said. "My family went to the New York
City Zoo and we saw all the animals. It was fascinating."
The teacher said, "That was good, but I wanted
you to use the word "fascinate". Sally
raised her hand. She said, "My family went
to the Statue of Liberty and I was fascinated."
The teacher said, "Well, that was good, Sally,
but I want the word "fascinate". Johnny
raised his hand. The teacher hesitated because
Johnny was noted for his bad language. She finally
decided there was no way he could damage the word
'fascinate', so she called on him. Johnny said,
"My sister has a sweater with ten buttons,
but her tits are so damn big, she can only fasten
eight."

BREGA
Na
língua inglesa, como posso dizer que algo
é “brega”? “Tasteless”?
Tentei explicar para o meu professor, só
que não conseguimos nos entender...
Não
há nada que seja “brega” na
Inglaterra ou nos Estados Unidos, e por isso é
tão difícil traduzir... Brincadeirinha.
Todos sabemos que não é bem assim...
Eu
diria que “tasteless” é uma
ótima opção, como também
“in bad taste”. Sinceramente, não
consegui entender por que o seu professor não
entendeu “tasteless”. Quando se aplica
exclusivamente a roupas, pode ser também
“overdressed” e “badly dressed”.
Tudo vai depender do motivo da breguice. Aí,
pode-se dizer “out of date”, “old
fashioned”, “corny” (mais para
“piegas”). “Tacky” é
ótimo, também.
Vamos
ver se consigo criar alguns bons exemplos. “I
thought that her brown dress was tasteless”
(“Achei o vestido marrom dela bem brega”);
“That TV show with Mérgio Sallandro
is so tacky” (“Aquele show de TV com
Mérgio Sallandro é tão brega”);
“He still wears long underpants; how quaint
and old-fashioned!” (“Ele ainda usa
ceroulas; que brega e fora de moda!”). Não,
não consegui nada muito criativo. Então
tá, por ora isso basta.
