WALL STREET
[Wall Street, centro financeiro dos Estados Unidos]

“Wall Street”, além de ser o nome da rua em Manhattan, Nova York, onde ficam a Bolsa de Valores e os escritórios dos maiores bancos e instituições financeiras, é também o termo usado para simbolizar o mundo financeiro em geral dos Estados Unidos. O nome da rua tem sua origem no século XVII quando, em 1653, os holandeses construíram no local uma muralha – “wall” – de madeira para proteger sua colônia contra um possível ataque dos índios ou dos ingleses. Nunca foi preciso usar a muralha. A cidade que os colonizadores holandeses chamavam de “New Amsterdam” foi tomada em 1664 pelos ingleses, que deram a ela o nome de “New York” em homenagem ao duque de York, irmão do rei. A muralha foi destruída em 1699 e a lembrança ficou só no nome da rua – “Wall Street”.

Estou ajudando um amigo com uma tradução e há uma expressão, “take a clean slate approach for the new age of services”, que não entendi. Você a conhece?

“Clean slate”, literalmente “ardósia, chapa ou lousa limpas”, quer dizer “começar do início”, “apagar o passado”, “estaca zero”, “começar de novo”, “não ter nada contra você”. “A clean slate approach fo the new age of services”, portanto, seria “uma abordagem que marca a nova era da prestação de serviços”. Como se vê, uma linguagem exagerada, típica da propaganda.
