Bugalho – ‘gall’ in English, is an abnormal growth on plants and trees, especially oaks, caused by insects or fungi. The similarity in sound and the rhyme between alhos and bugalhos explains the origin of this common phrase.
Esbugalhar
The verb esbugalhar means ‘to cut off the galls’, which look like round balls, from the trees. By analogy, this verb also came to mean ‘to open your eyes wide as if they are going to pop out’.
Olhos esbugalhados
Olhos esbugalhados means ‘goggle-eyed’, ‘pop-eyed’, or ‘bug-eyed’.
