The five-time world champions [os pentacampeões mundiais], who showed little [não mostraram muito] of their usual dazzling play [habitual futebol arte] during the group phase [a fase de grupos], sent an ominous warning [um alerta ameaçador] to their rivals as they comprehensively outplayed [foram muito superiores] Chile in Johannesburg, with Juan, Luis Fabiano and Robinho all on target [marcando os gols; todos no alvo (lit.)].

Brazil, who welcomed [contaram com a volta de] playmaker [armador, criador, jogador com a capacidade de criar jogadas] Kaka back from a one-match ban [depois da suspensão de um jogo], took the lead [abriu o placar; assumiu a liderança (lit.)] after 34 minutes from a straightforward corner routine [cruzamento clássico de escanteio].

Right-back [O lateral direito] Maicon crossed [cruzou] for central defender [zagueiro de área] Juan, who rose above [subiu mais alto que] the Chilean defense [a defesa chilena] to power his header into the net [para cabecear firme para o fundo da rede].

Brazil’s second goal, four minutes later [quatro minutos depois], was more characteristically Brazilian [foi tipicamente brasileiro] in its style [pelo estilo] and execution.

Robinho carried the ball down the left flank [correu com a bola dominada pela esquerda] before squaring [e tocou] to Kaka, who cushioned a pass into the path of [que ajeitou para] Luis Fabiano, who rounded the goalkeeper [driblou o goleiro] and scored [marcou].

The third goal, after 60 minutes, stemmed from [surgiu de] a swift counter-attack [um contra-ataque rápido], with Ramires charging down [penetrando pelo] the center with the ball and passing to Robinho, who curled his finish [bateu com efeito] around the goalkeeper.

Chile, who reached [chegaram] the semifinals on home soil [jogando em casa] in 1962, struggled [encontraram dificuldade] to break down [superar, transpor] a well-drilled Brazilian back line [uma defesa brasileira bem postada] and were restricted to [e se limitaram (a criar)] half chances [oportunidades que não levaram perigo] for Humberto Suazo and Jorge Valdivia.

Robinho came close to adding a fourth [quase marcou o quarto gol] when he was released down the right [apareceu desmarcado pela direita], but his low shot [chute rasteiro] was tipped [desviado] around the post [e saiu rente à trave] by goalkeeper Claudio Bravo.

The victory was Brazil’s eighth in a row over Chile [foi a oitava consecutiva sobre o Chile], who became [passou a ser, se tornou] the first South American side [o primeiro time sul-americano] to go out of the tournament [a ser eliminado do torneio].

Brazil will play [jogará contra] the Netherlands in the quarterfinals in Port Elizabeth on Friday, July 2.
