Pronúncia: COUNTRY
Talvez por terem as mesmas cinco letras iniciais, muitas pessoas acreditam que as palavras “COUNT” /kaunt/ e “COUNTRY” /KÂN tri/ são pronunciadas da mesma forma. Observe, contudo, que o som vocálico da primeira sílaba de “COUNTRY” é idêntico ao de “BUT” /bât/ e “CUT” /cât/. Por outro lado, o som das vogais em “COUNT” (contar) é o mesmo de “OUT” /aut/ e “ABOUT” /a baut/. Confira esta diferença consultando um bom dicionário de inglês. Há uma outra palavra muito parecida com as citadas e cuja pronúncia talvez ajude a causar confusão. É a palavra “county” [KAUN-ti] (condado, distrito) que a gente vê muito em filmes americanos ambientados em cidades pequenas. Por falar em filmes, mais duas pérolas das traduções. O nome do lugar em que se passava a série “Jeannie é um gênio” era Cocoa Beach. Entre nós, tornou-se a Praia dos Cocos. Recentemente, zapeando pelos canais de filmes, ouvi a personagem de Bruce Willis dizer “Never cry wolf!”, enquanto a legenda dizia “Lobos não choram.” Amplexos.
