Ortografia: Dobrar Consoantes

Muitas palavras em inglês são formadas a partir de um radical acrescido de um sufixo. Essa combinação acontece na formação do passado e do particípio passado dos verbos regulares, do grau comparativo e superlativo dos adjetivos etc. Algumas vezes a consoante final do radical é dobrada, por exemplo: STOP + ED = STOPPED, HOT + ER = HOTTER ou THIN + EST = THINNEST. Para que isso aconteça, duas condições devem ser satisfeitas:

  1. A terminação do radical deve ser obrigatoriamente consoante + vogal + consoante. Por exemplo, ROB + ED = ROBBED ou PLAN + ING = PLANNING.
  2. Se a palavra tiver mais de uma sílaba, a consoante final será dobrada somente se a última sílaba for a tônica. Exemplo: beGIN + ING = BEGINNING ou preFER + ED = PREFERRED.

Como não poderia deixar de ser, há uma exceção: no inglês britânico os verbos terminados em “L” sempre recebem duas letras “L” quando são acrescidos dos sufixos “ED” ou “ING”, como por exemplo em “CANCELLING” e “TRAVELLED”. Observe atentamente os exemplos a seguir.

  • arrepender-se – arrependido

Não dobrar

  • deVELop – DEVELOPED
  • desenvolver – desenvolvido
  • LISten – LISTENED
  • escutar – escutado
